Renowned[1] Chinese writer Yang Jiang, known for her prolific[2] output and marriage to an equally famous author, died Wednesday at age 104[3], state media said.

Yang died at Peking Union Medical College Hospital[北京协和医院] in Beijing, according to The Paper[澎湃新闻], a state-owned news website. It said her death had been confirmed by her publisher, the People's Literature Publishing House[人民文学出版社].

Citing different sources, Hong Kong station Phoenix TV[香港凤凰卫视] also confirmed Yang's death, the cause of which was not given.

Born in 1911, Yang became a household name[家喻户晓的人/名字] in China for her novels, plays, essays and translated works. She was the first to translate "Don Quixote[唐吉诃德]" into Chinese, and her version is still considered the definitive[4] one by many.

Her death was the top search term[热搜榜榜首] on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo on Wednesday, a testimony[证据;证明] to her fame and the public adoration[公众对她的爱慕/崇敬] she enjoyed.

In a 1981 collection of essays[散文集], Yang wrote with a sense of poignancy[5] on the daily lives of Chinese intellectuals[我国知识分子] during the chaos of the Cultural Revolution, when scholars and intellectuals were forced to perform hard labor[从事艰苦劳动]*.

Her 2003 essay collection "We Three[我们仨]," about her family life with her late husband and their daughter, was a best-seller[畅销书].

Yang was married to Qian Zhongshu, best known for his novel "Fortress Besieged[围城]," and theirs was widely seen as a model union set against the background of China's turbulent[6] 20th century.

After Qian's death in 1998, Yang embarked on[从事,着手;登上船] the task of compiling and editing[整理、编订] her husband's unpublished works and remained prolific herself.

In addition to "We Three," she published a sequel[续集] to her novel "Baptism[洗澡]" at age 103.
